Angry Birds Second Birthday

Angry Birds Second Birthday Invites a New Bird to the Party

Angry Birds has published another special-occasion update, this one celebrating the runway mobile hit's second birthday. With it, you get 15 new levels and a new projectile, the Orange Bird, which "propels any object it touches."

The update is to the main game, which is still 99 cents for the iPhone, $4.99 for the iPad. The news release announcing the update only mentioned the game's iOS versions.
Additionally, the "Birthday 2.0.0" update offers 15 more levels in which you may fling the aforementioned rancorous avians into cakes, balloons and other festive objects. There are also new achievements to be claimed through Game Center.

This Live-Action Angry Birds Halloween Special Brought to You by Smashing Pumpkins

All you need is some painted pumpkins, a few two-by-fours, a couple cinderblocks and a makeshift slingshot and your Halloween celebration can be as exciting as these guys' was.

If only they had had access to a higher grade of explosives, this Angry Birds pumpkin spectacular could have ended with a bang instead of a whimper. They might have lost limbs, but that's what happens when you inject yourself into a war that has nothing to do with you in the first place.

Still, they did get to exercise their painting skills, and they got more time outside than I have this year, so that's gotta be worth something.

Angry Birds is Still Going Strong With 30 Million Active Users Per Day

It's been damned popular for a damned long time, but Angry Birds' numbers don't appear to be dwindling at all. As Mashable reports, 30 million people play the portable game each day, logging over 300 million minutes of gameplay. Each day!

That's 208,333.3 days of Angry Birds played for each day of real time (or, as the article points, out, 109.5 billion minutes per year). There is a lot of fun math to be done here, but the upshot is that no one seems to have gotten sick of Angry Birds, and the game's momentum doesn't show signs of slowing down.

For my part, I haven't played Angry Birds in months. But now I'm feeling like I'm left out of the zeitgeist.

Angry Birds Go MAD, Crush Alfred E. Neuman

Some 300 million downloads later, Rovio's mobile hit Angry Birds has reached a very important milestone. Like recent-ish pop culture sensations Harry Potter, Justin Bieber and Mark Zuckerburg, Angry Birds graces the cover of a new issue of MAD Magazine.

In addition to taking a poke at Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and TV show Parks and Recreation, the usual gang of idiots at MAD take on the bird slinging sensation, immortalizing Alfred E. Neuman in pig, brick and wood. Plus, there's a giant Spy Vs. Spy pull-out poster! Sweet.

MAD Magazine issue 511 is expected within the next week or so.

Learn Physics The Angry Birds Way

I'm a bit of a physics hobbyist. That doesn't mean that I understand or can even converse in the language of motion, but I love reading about it.

Angry Birds in the Physics Classroom [Action-Reaction, via ElectricPig]
So you can imagine my delight when ElectricPig wrote up something about a physics professor using Angry Birds to teach students about physics. Turns out he's not the only one, there's a slew of physics fans who have started using the game in classrooms.

I think Angry Birds' rising popularity in classrooms is driven by its overall popularity in pop culture, its direct use of physics and the fact that the game is now playable in a web browser. The fact that it's playable in a browser means it is much easier to capture your own footage of angry birds laying down a bit of revenge of obnoxious pigs.

Plenty of people have been writing about physics and these cartoon game birds, but my favorite has to be this little video-enhanced physics pop quiz.

I've dropped the questions in with each video. I don't know ANY of these answers but if you want to enlighten us in comments go right ahead. Sound smart enough and I promise I'll buy it.

1. Make a reasonable estimate for the size of an angry bird, and determine the value of g in Angry Bird World. Why would the game designer want to have g be different than 9.8 m/s²?

2. Does the blue angry bird conserve momentum during its split into three?

3. Does the white bird conserve momentum when it drops its bomb? Why would the game designer want the white bird to drop its bomb the way that it does?

4. Describe in detail how the yellow bird changes velocity. You will need to analyze more than one flight path to answer this question.

5. Shoot an angry bird so that it bounces off one of the blocks. Determine the coefficient of restitution and the mass of the angry bird.

Siege Hero Returns Fire Against Birds

Once upon a time, Armor Games published a flash game called Crush the Castle, and it was quite good. Then another studio came along, replaced the trebuchet with a slingshot, the ordnance with birds, and made off with all the gold in the land.

Armor Games strikes back, sort of, with Siege Hero, an iPhone/iPad game that is divergent from Angry Birds in the most important areas, and nakedly derivative of it in just the right ways to deliver an all-around good time to the knowledgable gamer.

The concept is the same: It's a physics game in which you must bring a tottering construction down on its occupants in as few shots as possible. But in gameplay Siege Hero is more like Armor's Sieger than Crush the Castle (or Angry Birds). Instead of firing in an arc from the left side of the screen, you are facing your objective head on, and you tap the area where you wish to target your shot.
A telescope feature, unlocked very early on, allows for very precise aim. To balance this out, Siege Hero's castles have a more demanding build to them that require you to think hard about their weakest point if you want to get the level's top score (represented as a gold crown, above a silver crown and a beat-up viking hat). In some cases, you'll need to set the collapse up with a shot at a load bearing wall that apparently does nothing, until the second shot sets the whole thing in motion.

You get variable ammo: the straight up heavy rock, cluster rocks, bombs, cluster bombs, fire jars and boiling oil, the latter of which is antipersonnel only. Another wrinkle not seen in Angry Birds is the presence of peasants who must be spared from the collapse if you're to claim the gold crown.

Video Siege Hero HD Click here : Siege Hero

Those who find Angry Birds maddeningly addictive will easily find Siege Hero to be the same. The difference is Angry Birds' inscrutable slingshot trajectory makes it very, very difficult to set up precision shots, much less repeat them. Siege Hero is satisfying in that you will hit what you aim at, but you have to think a little harder about what you want to hit and why.

Siege Hero's presentation, art style and other touches mimic Rovio's hit without a care, from the pause menu to the treasure levels to the taunting laughter when you fail the board. It's like Armor knows people will call this an Angry Birds ripoff without knowing the full story, which makes those people, not Rovio, the butt of Siege Hero's meta-joke.

In a span of about four days I gold-crowned all sixty-three levels plus the 10 treasure levels, and collected every badge but one (saving 300 peasants), That may sound easier than Angry Birds, but as hard as that game is to put down, I tire of the masochism it requires to three-star some boards. Siege Hero puts up enough of a fight while being much more transparent about its expectations.

It may never come close to being the gargantuan presence on the App Store that is Angry Birds but for me, Armor reminds us it was the first to do this kind of game, and with Siege Hero, it again does it the best.

The Angry Birds car is the most addictive Chevy of all time

Spotted on an Ohio Freeway, this heavily customized Angry Birds-themed car is either a great meta-commentary on distracted driving or merely the most Internet relevant donk since the Facebook Caprice.

The attention to detail here is kind of wonderful, from the pause button on the front quarter panels to the opening screen mural on the hood. But the Pièce de résistance? All of the characters on covers behind the 24-inch wheel spokes.

We give this car three stars for topicality.

Angry Birds Rio arrives in March

Rovio and 20th Century Fox are proud to announce unique partnership uniting Angry Birds with summer animated feature film Rio.

From the makers of the hit Ice Age series, Rio is a comedy-adventure about taking a walk on the wild side.  Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, living a comfortable life with his owner and best friend Linda in the small town of Moose Lake, Minnesota.  Blu and Linda think he’s the last of his kind, but when they learn about another Macaw who lives in Rio de Janeiro, they head to the faraway and exotic land to find Jewel, Blu’s female counterpart.

Not long after they arrive, Blu and Jewel are kidnapped by a group of bungling animal smugglers.  With the help of street smart Jewel, and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu escapes.  Now, with his new friends by his side, Blu will have to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda, the best friend a bird ever had.

In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to to save their friends, Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, Rio.  Angry Birds Rio will pair the physics-based gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the highly-anticipated film.
Angry Birds Rio will launch with 45 dedicated levels and will regularly add new levels via app updates. The game will be available for download on smart phones and tablets worldwide.
